A Note from the School Nurse

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year at Madison Cross Roads Elementary! As the school nurse, I will be here to serve your child’s health needs through prevention and treatment. I am a Registered Nurse and will be available daily during regular school hours for health assessment/care, medication administration, and emergency response. If your child has a medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies, or other serious illness, please contact me.

Medication- It is not permissible for students to have in his/her possession any medication at any time on the school campus (exception: certain emergency medications after the prescriber/parent authorization has been completed and is on file with the school nurse). Parents must bring the medication to school along with the required forms. All prescription medications require a prescription label, this includes inhalers. Forms are available from the school nurse or the Madison County Schools website. Request for physician’s orders are the responsibility of the parent. Photocopies or altered orders (use of white out, for example) do not meet state requirements.

Notification- Parents will be notified for severe head injuries, fever above 100, and suspected communicable diseases. Parents are not routinely notified for minor injuries or visits to the nurse. If your child has excessive visits, then I will contact you.

Illness/ Communicable Disease- Children are to stay home from school if they have a fever of 100 or higher, diarrhea, or vomiting. Students must be free of fever for a full 24 hours, without taking fever controlling medication, before returning to school. Students should be free of diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school.

Special Diets- Please obtain note from doctor if dietary accommodations are required.

Clothing and Toileting- Independence in toileting is and expectation of children entering school. Younger students should have an extra set of clothing in their backpack. If your child has an accident and is unable to clean and change himself, school personnel will contact you to come to the school to assist your child. (Note: Children with special needs will need to be accommodated per the student’s IEP.)

Please feel free to contact me with any medical concerns that you have. You can email me or call 256-851-4600 during school hours.
